Before and After: An Overclocked HTC One (Video)

http://cdn.pocketnow.com/images/630/420/1367521570/2013/05/overclocked-htc-one.jpg

The HTC One may be one of the fastest clocked smartphones on the market. It’s powered by a 1.7Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 600 chipset that puts last year’s chips to shame. But for some, fast simply isn’t enough. Some need more power, more speed, more gigahertz. Some need an overclocked HTC One. Fortunately, that’s not out of the question, and enabling it is quite simple. All you need is the right kernel, a little know-how and a custom recovery. Flash away and …

Google’s Field Trip app granting free admission to 13 museums

Google's Field Trip app granting free admission to 13 museums

While Google’s Field Trip app may find attractions off the beaten path, it’s been up to users to foot the bill for their excursions. Now, however, the Niantic Labs-made application is handing out freebies for an unspecified limited time, allowing those who wield it to waltz into 13 museums for free. Folks near the establishments will receive Free Entry cards in the “nearby” tab, which will let them pass turnstiles without forking over a dime. Although Field Trip has been beefed up with points of interest in over 80 countries, the participating institutions — which range from The Field Museum to the Walt Disney Family Museum — are all located in six US cities. Head past the break for the full list.

ASUS Transformer Book review: meet ASUS’ first detachable Ultrabook

ASUS Transformer Book review: meet ASUS' first detachable Ultrabook

For a while, it looked like ASUS’ Transformer Book would turn out to be vaporware: after debuting to much fanfare a year ago, it encountered numerous delays, and even missed the crucial holiday shopping season. Now it’s finally here, priced at $1,499 with a Core i7 processor, a 13.3-inch (1080p) screen and a detachable keyboard dock housing both a spare battery and a 500GB hard drive. The problem is the timing: Intel is about to launch its new Haswell chips, and here’s the Transformer Book, arriving on the scene with a lofty price and a year-old CPU.

It’d be easy enough to tell you just wait for a refresh, which is how we’ve been ending all of our PC reviews in the weeks leading up to this year’s Computex. But it’s still worth investigating whether the Transformer Book (aka the TX300) is a compelling idea. Though we’ve seen many tablet hybrids (the Surface Pro, etc.), they’ve mostly had smaller 11-inch screens. So what happens when you take that form factor and stretch it to accommodate a bigger screen — and a more spacious keyboard? And how does it compare to all those convertible options out there, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 or the Dell XPS 12? Let’s have a look.

Mid-Burglary Butt Dial to 911 Lands Stoner Suspects in Jail

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18o7i2ltkp9w9jpg/ku-xlarge.jpg

There are lots of embarrassing ways to get busted for a crime. You could flee police only to get attacked by an alligator, or you could accidentally lock your victim in their own gun closet to predictable results. Dumber still? Butt dialing 911 as you’re in the midst of a robbery.

Last week, either Nathan Teklemariam and Carson Rinehart, both 20, pocked dialed 911 as they were about to go on a minor crime spree. The conversation started out innocently, if still incriminatingly, enough, with the two discussing their desire to get stoned. “I just want to smoke weed so bad right now,” one of them said as the emergency dispatcher in Fresno, Calfornia. listened in.

The drug talk was enough to keep the dispatcher on the line, and after a half hour or so, the conversation turned from smoking weed to burglary. “Get the bolt and give me the hammer just in case,” one of the two suspects said. Shortly after, the dispatcher heard a window break, and the two started shouting that they’d found prescription drugs.

As the two suspects left the scene, the dispatcher passed along clues about their location to police, who eventually located the duo and pulled them over.

“He’s right (expletive) behind me dude,” one suspect said. “He’s following the (expletive) out of me, bro!”

Police officers searched the car, eventually finding the prescription drugs and other stolen items. Both Teklemariam and Rinehard were arrested and charged with burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.

A spokesperson from the Fresno Police Department told ABC News that the case was a first. “There have been times where the dispatcher hears something like this, but never has a call come in before a crime being committed and staying on all the way to the end,” Sgt. Jaime Rios said.

As for Teklemariam and Rinehard, they were as surprised as anyone once they learned how they were caught.

“This fool really called 911?” one of the suspects said. “Damn.”

iOS default despair: Where Ars staff turns for better app experiences

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/tweetbot-macro.jpg

Aurich Lawson

Thirty-party apps didn’t exist when the iPhone first launched in 2007. At that time Apple offered its own set of built-in iOS apps and users were relegated to Web apps if they wanted tools made by someone else. Luckily things have changed since; we now have hundreds of thousands of apps to choose from for our iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. Many of them even offer similar or better functionality than the default apps from Apple.

Users still can’t delete Apple’s default apps from iOS devices (grumble grumble…) but there are plenty of useful alternatives out there for people hoping to use something other than the default. Readers are always asking about which apps the Ars staff uses when they choose to ditch the Apple’s camera, mapping, music, or other apps. I put out a call to our editors and writers to find out just what does the Ars staff use for the major app categories (and why)? Here’s what we came up with:

Maps

Google Maps

I never upgraded my iPhone 4 from iOS 5 to iOS 6 so I can’t say if the new Apple Maps are as bad as people claim. However, I rushed to download the new Google Maps when it hit the App Store and haven’t been disappointed. The underlying map technology is the same as the one in my stock app since iOS 5′s pre-installed app also relies on Google. But the spoken, turn-by-turn directions and traffic data make the new version of Google Maps far superior.
